EIPC to Hold Workshop on PCB Bio MEMs

The European Institute of Printed Circuits (EIPC), in cooperation with the University of Bath, will be holding a workshop focused on PCB Bio-MEMS on December 8 at the Premier Inn Hotel in London Heathrow.

Bio-MEMS are biomedical (or biological) microelectromechanical systems (a.k.a. lab-on-chip). Given this strong market “pull” for more BioMEMs devices ($2.5 billion in 2014 and anticipated to grow at a CAGR of over 25% from 2016 to 2023), the commercialization of lab-on-chip devices is currently the “holy grail of the research community. The lab-on-PCB approach is being followed in various research groups all over Europe, owing to its inherent upscaling potential: the PCB industry is well-established all around the world, with standardized fabrication facilities and processes, however commercially exploited currently only for electronics.

Cutting-edge automation, AI, machine learning, and Industry 4.0 are all part of the response to the increasing demands for printed circuit boards that are not only faster, smaller, and cheaper but also higher-frequency, lower-loss, more temperature tolerant, and higher reliability. In many cases, it will be unique and advanced research coming out of the university system that will help move the industry forward.
